Linda Dobinson's Poetry Pages
Hi, my name is Linda. Welcome to my poetry pages.
I was born in Croydon, England but grew up in Barbados. Island life was warm, easy, relaxed and of course you are never far from the sea. I was spoiled. As an only child I quickly learned to to use my imagination to amuse myself.
When I was seventeen we returned to England. The cold was a shock but the fast pace of London life was exciting. Although I did not like the cold - and never will - I loved the changing seasons. In summer I love the long evenings but equally in winter I love the long nights. Spring means 'goodbye cold', while the colours of autumn are inspiring. I'll never forget the first time I saw mist - it was magical, like being transported to a beautiful alien planet.
I love reading, writing poetry, baking cakes, F1, shopping, chocolate, cats, and watching way too much TV - not necessarily in that order. I am teetotal and do not smoke - does that make me two shades of boring?
I love the classics and my top three are - Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, and Queen Lucia. As for poetry, my favourites are 'The Lady of Shallott' by Tennyson and 'Kubla Khan' by Coleridge. When it comes to contemporary, I love chick-lit and YA. I am a huge fan of the 'I heart' series by Lindsey Kelk, and 'Just one day' by Gayle Forman was my favourite novel of 2015. I recently joined a book site called goodreads and I can be found at www.goodreads.com/author/show/6077640.Linda_Dobinson
I have been married and divorced twice so I know all about the joy and pain of love. Good or bad our experiences make us who we are.
I started writing poetry when I was studying for a BA degree with the Open University. I joined the OU Poetry Society, and the many positive comments I received encouraged me to submit work to poetry publications. I have had poems published in 'Decanto', 'Time Haiku', 'Poetic Licence', 'Candelabrum', 'Krax' and 'Poetry Now' to name a few. As a writer I draw on my experience, but my main inspiration is nature. Having said that anything can grab my imagination, for example, a moment between two characters in my favourite TV show 'The100' sparked a poem.
My third book 'Rainbows and Roses' was published in November 2015. I have devoted a page to it on this site.
In January I published my second collection of poems Encounter. The poems are divided into three themes - love, life and nature.
In 'life' I look back at my childhood in Barbados, remembering my schooldays, running on the beach and being a teenager with a headful of romantic dreams. I also look at the ups and down of being an adult with hopes and dreams.
In 'love' I recount my experiences of the joy it brings, the pain when it goes wrong, unrequited, and finally moving on.
In 'nature' I share the thrill of a new spring, mercurial summer, the glorious colours of autumn and the frozen wonders of winter.
Encounter is avalilable from Amazon -
